Commitment to Empathy & Racial Equality

Dear Los Amigos Families,

In our school, we have worked hard to teach students about the importance of empathy, kindness, and respect for individuals of every race, ethnicity, and background. We view our diversity as a great strength. Across the district, we’re committed to fostering safe and welcoming schools where there is no place for hate or bias.

As you know, the recent death of George Floyd has highlighted injustices that exist in our nation, which has understandably led to feelings of anger and sadness.  Some of the current peaceful protests of citizens calling out for justice and mercy have been co-opted by groups who, for their own motivations, seek to stoke the fires of divisiveness by looting and rioting. Fortunately, that was not the case in Garden Grove on Wednesday, when over 3,000 individuals conducted a peaceful march that ended prior to curfew and allowed the participants, primarily many of our high school students, to express themselves and their concerns. We are proud of our students and their desire to stand up against discrimination and advocate for equality. No matter what challenges we face, we will face them collectively in the Garden Grove Way, and persevere in our mission of equipping our students for lifelong success. The most effective way to achieve justice via our work is to prepare successful and empathetic scholars to leave us and improve the world in which we live.

As we prepare for the last day of school next week, we do want to remind families that the Governor’s stay-at-home order to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 remains in place.  We encourage you to continue social distancing and doing your part to keep our community safe.  Our district will provide everyone with regular updates through the summer as we plan for reopening in the Fall.
