Los Amigos Student Receives Award from California School Administrators

Melissa Palencia was nominated by Dr. Lila Jenkins, Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) Director of 7-12 Instructional Services, to represent the district in the award program. She was recommended for nomination by Mr. Carlos Castillo, Los Amigos AVID teacher; Vicki Braddock, Principal and Stephanie Heflin, Assistant Principal.

“Melissa is not distracted by the obstacles she has encountered and remains laser-focused on her goal of becoming an engineer,” Castillo said. “She currently has a cumulative GPA of 4.04 – a particularly special feat since her schedule has consisted of Advanced Placement, Honors, and AVID courses over four years of high school.”

In addition to her exceptional academic record, Palencia has achieved success in high school athletics and community service. She has contributed to the success of the Los Amigos girls’ cross country team as well as Girls League.

Palencia plans on studying mechanical engineering and will attend college in the fall.
