9-12 Best in Show Award:
Ariana Orozco
Los Amigos wins 9-12 Best in Show award for the 2nd year in a row!
Ariana Orozco’s self-portrait, titled “Dandelion,” was awarded Best in Show for the 9-12 division. Ariana had this to say about this piece:
“In “Dandelion,” I chose to experiment with acrylic painting in a way that was very out of my comfort zone. I was inspired to create this piece after exploring Impressionism. This portrait was specifically inspired by Pierre Renoir and his vibrant works. I was not only aiming to just capture an accurate portrayal of how someone looks, but also the overlooked details such as the way the sun shines through hair and the subtle blue hues in skin that often go unnoticed. I wanted the viewer to be drawn in by it. I wanted to encapsulate movement in a still portrait and also the ever-changing nature of light and how it reacts to the environment around it. I decided to challenge myself to look at the painting process in a different way like how Impressionist painters would, such as letting my brush strokes be loose and unblended and not focusing on little details. This style of painting was very freeing and allowed me to be experimental with my piece. With a medium such as acrylic paint, fast drying times can be a big obstacle, but throughout this painting process I learned to adapt to those obstacles and work with them.”
In addition to this piece, 38 Lobo artists’ work will be featured in the Garden Grove Courtyard Center gallery. These pieces include drawings, paintings, sculptures, graphic design, and more.
