I need sister Christensen and your son or daughter's teacher I've been Atlas Migos High School since 2000 I'm a product of Orange County Public Schools with the Golden West College I went to Cal State Long Beach I have done a lot of things in that time I was I was a coach at Loyola High School track and field Lifetime Youth Ministry volunteer wise and I went back to school couple years after graduating with a with my bachelor's to basically of pursuit Prudential so I have been like I said it was going to goes for quite a while and it's been awhile and I'm married and pretty much just your typical guy but what I really want to get into today or tonight if any of what you're doing this what is to be expected in my classes obviously things are a little bit different so we're doing a lot of virtual right now and we're making the best of it what I'm hoping is you is to share with you Sunday expectations places to find electronic information talk about that we'll talk about the electronic textbook making up coin intervention as they call it which is our new study group can start answering 7. As call and then I'll take you a little bit through the school website so let me start with when I share my screen is going to be a messy but don't mind my I'm at home obviously this is my home computer but I've been using it a lot for work which I'm sure some of your in that scene I'm sure my screen I'm going to start out by bringing you to Google Classroom because this is the place where with almost all of your teachers information to be updated there are pretty regular basis so I want to show you that when you're your students your son daughters and perhaps they're watching this to be a whole bunch of different classes for them to take from not as many as mine because I've got my old ones in here going to choose case was received at 4. 1 and you can also I'm trying to let you know how to do this so what I've done is created some kind of like subfolders within this Google classroom let me show you I've got a specimens it'll just started chapter 1 quiz key terms essential questions and standards classwork which is kind of an ongoing tally of things that we've been singing class daily lessons which is essentially just the lesson plan so they know what to expect what we did that day rev also uploaded all the lectures and these are in the format of PowerPoint it is somewhat limited but at least they can see the material 80% of these were probably going to be doing there's also blank templates for class where is the beginning of the year stuff take a second and I want to go to my syllabus first so if you are parents of an advanced placement government if you can just hold on a few minutes and we'll get to that probably about 5 minutes so here's my syllabus and your sons and daughters will already have a copy of this I'm not going to go to the entire thing so I do want to highlight a few things the expectations are pretty basic but I've added to this online expectations you must be there on time entire time use your normal name video switch. these are district policies what they're asking okay so that we may interact and so that I know that that you were your child is actually there the entire time we're also asking that create a routine for themselves just like they were going through school go to bed early get up early we also wanting to take care of their emotional health connecting with friends virtually or if you're comfortable with the socially distancing scenario I've been seeing with family and friends than that of course it's something else you could do and whatever support groups did they might have whether it be just a group of friends Club are you proof or anything like that we are expecting them to work hard in the class and I want to stress very important that this class is a required class to graduate I don't want to see me teaser apps and I certainly don't want to have one of your kids sale that is not all right and in Fairfield reason for that if if they're doing what they're supposed to do there so you're going to be fine on this class we're also asking them to take their going to have to work communication as we all are because they can't afford to school classroom right now yeah I think everyone's anticipating going back into the classroom I'm excited about that when the time is right Interstate we don't exactly know when that's going to be whether a month two months or even further okay we're also asking that students don't just sit in front of school I'm trying to give them breaks like five minute breaks as a teaching and then we have breaks between classes Stockton be perfect we have seen problems and those problems are our basic technological more than anything else we're also like to point out here is our schedule I think that you already have a copy of that noticed it Monday is a is a normal. 125 all the way off all the way to 6 so kind of like to schedule the exact schedule as last year otherwise we're going into what we call block schedule Conneaut the fact that on Wednesdays they actually get out early so the teachers to have collaborations another thing that's new one two three 1 2 3 right for Tuesday and Thursday. Wednesday and Friday are. 4506 kids are getting pretty used to it by now I think they understand it I want you to notice here that says homeroom okay and I'm sure that Administration has tried to reach out to you if your kids are going to be getting extra help or at least we're allowing this time for extra help so they can visit any of their teachers and wish they might need help or or place to just ask questions and work obviously when we go back to campus that will look a little bit or different a little bit more personalized and probably a little bit more powerful over making the best of a situation right now there are four units College Prep Civics I've been teaching civics almost I think actually all 20 years that I've been here I've been teaching advanced placement civics for probably 15 years US history and world history key concept so here's our four units and this is going to be quarter 1 unit 1 and 2 this will be quarter 2 unit 3 and 4 whether your college prep your child's College Prep or AP this is amazing year okay this is an amazing year in terms of you have an election is a Highway dissipated election it is basically controversial or going to see more controversy and for all maybe the negative news that's out there in terms of civics class together or government class together it's still going to be pretty amazing and powerful and we're looking for opportunities to talk about some of these current situations they're happening when I talk about creating weights I do want to point out that over 50% of the grade will be summative assessment know what I'm following is probably more like 55 60% somewhere in that range this is a district mandate has asked us to basically sorry my kids are all right now haven't started school yet well in virtual school but they will be here's my point so summative assessment is things that measure their knowledge over a course of time and then we have formative assessment the note call work although I don't assign homework that often it will be the quizzes that they're taking each week you can see a breakdown of migrating and as well as kind of the percentages participation actually give a few points for I think it's especially important in this environment for students interacting so if they're here they're answering the polls are answering the questions or their work they're engaged in our conversations each day they're going to get some points across the board I think with me you're going to notice that there will be some major unit assessments but that will be at the end of each unit every week There's a quiz and we'll talk more choose a little info on the final exam trying to really limit the late work and missing work because everyone sit home and make sure that everything's a little decent it's making it a little bit more difficult that way so if you could please encourage your son and daughter to turn their things in on time it would definitely help us out a lot okay when we get to the bottom here this is just more talk on Google classroom and very quickly show you reading pacing schedule for watch strap Civics again. 1 su-35 so you're going to notice that there is reading each week every few days and then there's an expectation that they have read that they've looked at at least the Cornell notes I've uploaded if we get a chance to go over and then I have a list of key terms she not in others things for their weekly formative assessment quiz we just had our first one which was on chapter 1 foundations ago next week on the 11th or the day before students we on a Thursday these are worth as much as a text but still the poinsettia sports are going to be adding up we're looking at our first assessment unit 2 rice responsibilities in Congress we we get to the end of the quarter on the 23rd right so I'm going to exit that we talked about the book really quick Temple College Prep the actual textbook you can see that but there's also the ability to go online I can show you about online for that we had some really big confusion about this so you don't type in ww.w which a lot of students were doing mistake Moana portal ggusd got us it brings you to something called classlink No notice up here sign students login with your username not email address so I'm going to login as a teacher and college prep and this is slightly confusing because they're using someone else to run their program but it's Sabbath easy Bridge ccusd their interface is going to look a little bit different than mine but they will have access to the textbook and all the tools that are there so we a day last week going through this are we looked at then I called it an interactive scavenger hunt or an online scavenger hunt different things do you know next week is chapter 2 all kinds of stuff in here all right they can actually go to the e-text what is the weather same here so I did want to bring that up I'm going to go back people taking else to show you parents show all I mentioned before all the power points are uploaded essentially class discussions so we just went over this one Rebirth of actually I haven't gotten there yet and you can see the notes are there I don't require my students to write every single thing. I don't think that's that's useful for them I don't think it's realistic assuming that many of them are going to go to college teachers are never going to say I'm going to grade your notes and you have to write down every single thing they're like right there's actually a lot more that I would like to share with you to that what are the things I want to talk about and I can go to the screen to show you that all Civics classes College Prep today so you can raise your grade to receive a close reading and then answering the questions for topic 1 into reading and note-taking guide don't have that with me right now but it is a plastic it is a blue kind of stop cover almost looks like a magazine and in it they can interact there's there's notes that are preset and when they answer the questions and as long as you're all that they can actually pull their score quit to 70% Solis still have C now I realize some teachers they might just stay away you can just redo it again until you get it right just couple of issues with that first of all everything is online right now and there's I find that there's going to be a lot of cheating if that were to happen secondly I don't really think that memorizing the answers to question it is a great way to learn so by doing this I feel like to see information is really getting into their head they're producing for me Mastery in just a different form okay the other things I would like to do now I guess it's this point probably going to switch to 80 so if your son or daughter's in advanced placement oh yeah show you I want to show you a little bit about the school so when you go there our school website there's a lot of things back to school staff videos which I'm sure you're checking out but one thing is particularly if you if you some reason your students don't know this you can see that there's a student section and then there's a parent section so there's less Migos parents information and other parent resources okay so I just click on one of those right it just brings in different things resources what are resources that are on here which is linked to the Garden Grove unified school district website things down here all right you just wait I'm talking to parents right now okay sorry okay I'm going to go back now for advanced placement so 480 so you can this is pretty much over if you are College Prep against the most important takeaways contact me if you need anything add. Email Kay Christensen at ggusd. Us is preferred required class to graduate your son and daughter does their work that's really once an alarm to stress before you go here is the fact that when we get switched back to regular school there's going to be some changes right now things digital and so therefore you see all these little things going into the great but no one by one by one by one but I'm fully confident we're going to go back and when we two transitioning more into a traditional notebook which is kind of an organizer and things like that for them so they'll be near activities different activities that we can do dinner morphe space there more group oriented and things like that so please just keep tabs on the Aeries portal 2 I'll be uploading for all scnow rating is is monstrous right now with this formatting but you know every week I'm updating great so just wait especially on the weekends are going to probably okay so now I'm going to go like we see here too. For and easiest thing to do is go to class work things that I just talked about are very similar but of course for HD where we're looking at things a little bit differently and as much as I'd say there's a focus there's all it's Leah focused on Civic behavior and just becoming good people and understanding politics things like that there is more of an emphasis on really understanding government and our political system so I'm sure you're aware there's no pee test that a pee test you can make the schedule is slightly different or that we're actually going to be transitioning to we're students right now over two weeks early to a pecan or macro econ in the reason for that is we're trying to normalize there's two Masters test beginning of May I first one I bring you to the beginning of the year and syllabus this is the text book you can see it here American democracy now again the way to get there and you're going to go to the McGraw-Hill icon free talks about this with your students have a problem going we've already talked about the schedule and disciplinary practices are here but I also would like to skip down and show you the unit the unit layout my units again super quarter little bit different than College Prep foundations and political ideologies in Congress the presidency in Prestige Mitchell Branch the rights and Liberties when the placement test was restructured about two years ago at one of the many more non-negotiables Addison have to be done I think that they have to know so what I've done here as you can see for each unit not only if I provided reading as well as their textbook supplemental readings that might help them but I'm giving them the documents that they have to know we broken it down to its management okay it's also parts of the Constitution and Supreme Court cases 15th Street the AP college board is saying you have to know you so we'll be studying a lot of these things as we go through discourse Rashawn going formative assessment again you can take a look at this and 4 minutes summited possibilities and again I can't do all of these until we come back to class find me the weight just like last time using what the district has kind of mandated for us so I'm going to close 6 to make sure you just a couple more things and then we're done I would like to show you the schedule that's not the right one reading schedule so every day I've broken it down into little chunks so that students okay I found that throughout the years especially crepey hey if you stay on track steer you can do this in a manageable way so for example today they were supposed to know articles 4 through 7 of The Constitution they were literally supposed to read this is what as they come into class that day it should have already read on the 8th which is Tuesday it should have read chapter 3 Pages 86 to 96 I need to be organized and I think that mine necessity of being organized as much as I can really help you're going to see that their current event it's actually going to be due on the 9th she got something every day whether it's this is the reading is supposed to be done or maybe there's going to be a practice frq for prostate exams which we get a little closer to that you can see and hear that as I was telling you a little bit early I believe it's the week after Christmas break so there's going to be an assessment of your final exam and then they switch to TV will be doing review sessions as well because we have all the same kids there will be review sessions in April March I like to do do a pizza party reviews a pizza party and we do different challenges with different rewards and things like that so you try to keep it fun as much are listening. so I was just in with saying I truly care about your your kids and I will I'm about to be willing to help them I think intervention is going to be a great is it is now keeping kids accountable saying you got to go to a class I think this more important than anything else through all this why why Civics and government is so important is that idea of just becoming a good productive today I'm not talking about status I'm talking about you know whether someone is here as a guest or not or they're not actually assistant like we need all our people today happy citizenship skills and to be able to take a look at articles at political on and things like that to evaluate them to look at things from both sides to understand if something is credible or not our president makes references to use a lot so how do you differentiate what is fake news what is real right Sunita travel things that we're going to be covering stop sharing so. Then it's kind of the turn the summary and please reach out to me my email as I said and I'm hoping that we have a great year together and I'm hoping that we're all going to be back in the classroom soon and and that's it for now okay you guys take care and I got these little munchkins running all around me which I'm sure you a lot if you do too so thank you so much and
